Law, Justice and Legislative Affairs 
CITIZEN CHARTER OF DEPARTMENT OF LAW, JUSTICE & LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS
The Department of Law, Justice & Legislative Affairs is engaged in various functions as:
- Rendering advice on legal issues referred to it by other departments of Govt. of NCT of Delhi.
- Performing consultative role in regard to proposals for legislators
- Vetting of statutory rules / regulations, notifications, byelaws and finalization of important MOUs, etc. referred to it by the departments.
- Preparation of panel of advocates for defending the court cases on behalf of GNCTD in Delhi High Court, CAT, District Courts, VAT appellate Tribunal, etc. and issuing BTFs for appointment of these advocates.
- Supervision and monitoring of execution of various plan / non-plan schemes in respect of District Courts, Family Courts, etc. being the administrative department. It also includes providing infrastructure to District Courts, Family Courts, Delhi State Legal Services Authority etc.
- The department appoints Administrator General and Official Trustee for the GNCTD for administering the unclaimed properties in Delhi and also issuing Succession Certificates.
- Appoints Oath Commissioners and Notary Publics for the GNCT of Delhi and maintains relevant records required in this regard.
- Administers the law officers of the government including Standing Counsel (Civil and Criminal ), Addl. Public Prosecutors as well as paying the retainer ship fee to them from time to time
This department strives for streamlining the litigation process of various departments of government of NCT of Delhi by providing legal advices and opinions. It also ensures that the best possible counsels are available to defend the government before various courts of law. Besides this, sufficient number of Notaries and Oath Commissioners have been made available to the citizens of Delhi. Moreover, there is proper infrastructural support available to all the District Courts of Delhi so that speedy and fair justice delivery is ensured. Mediation Centres and Delhi Disputes Resolution Society are in place for facilitating the speedy resolution of disputes. Delhi State Legal Services Authority is providing free legal aid to litigants who cannot afford to engage lawyers.
